29/03/10

SportStars has been honoured for its support for work experience, at a special awards ceremony held in Cardiff.

Careers Wales Cardiff and Vale held its seventh annual Most Valued Partner Awards at the St David’s Hotel and Spa, for organisations which made an outstanding contribution to Careers Wales activities throughout the previous year.

Careers Wales Cardiff and Vale provides free, impartial careers information, advice and guidance for all ages. The company’s Education Business Partnership (EBP), plays a major role in  brokering links between local employers,  schools and  colleges helping to raise student achievement and providing young people with opportunities to develop work related skills.

The awards ceremony, supported by British Gas, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, KTS Owens Thomas, and The COS Group, recognised support for a range of initiatives, including work experience, mentoring, the promotion of enterprise and business awareness, projects to promote social inclusion, the training and recruitment of young people, and support for teacher placements.

Established in 2005, SportStars, a Cardiff-based was set up to provide providing high quality sports coaching for primary school children across south Wales and the south West of England.

A Careers Wales spokesperson said: “This private company provides sport and drama coaching to children aged 4-12 years of age.  SportStars’ qualified coaches run PE and drama lessons during term time and work with parents offering after school, weekend and holiday events across 15 different sports.

The company, through Emrys Haugen, has been offering quality work experience places via the Education Business Partnership since 2008 by offering 30 places annually.  The programme is well organised with the students receiving a starter pack detailing the employer’s aim and objectives.  This has proved to be a very popular placement with Cardiff and Vale students.

James Taylor, managing director of SportStars said: “We are thrilled to be recognised for our work with Career Wales. Every year we offer like-minded, motivated students the opportunity to gain the knowledge and experience they require as they embark on their future careers. We have worked closely with Career Wales over the last two years to offer work experience placements at SportStars and we look forward to offering further work experience opportunities to students in the months ahead.”

Mark Freeman, Chief Executive of Careers Wales Cardiff and Vale said “The stories behind these awards are evidence of the difference we can all make to individuals’ lives by working together.  Our combined knowledge, skills and experience can form a powerful force in helping young people and adults make the most of themselves and their opportunities, whatever their abilities or background.

“With the current economic climate it is more important than ever that we continue to work together to encourage individuals to engage in learning so that they can develop the skills, qualities and attitudes that employers are looking for now and in the future.

“I would like to congratulate all the award winners, who have all been nominated by staff from across Careers Wales Cardiff and Vale.”
